Highland Prep student Emily Low and Mary E. Donick, from Paradise Honors High School, are among 16,000 semi-finalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program.
According to a press release, about 95% of semifinalists are expected to progress as finalists, with half of the finalists winning a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
More than 1.2 million juniors in about 20,000 high schools entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as part of the screening process.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1% of United States high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
The high school seniors have an opportunity to continue to compete for about 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth $24 million that will be offered next spring.
The 2027 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced from April through July, and will join over 395,000 distinguished young people who earned the Merit Scholar title.
