Film screening honors Surprise resident

Trustwell Living at Kingswood Place, an assisted living community in Surprise, will host a red carpet premiere screening of “Being Heumann” Friday, Nov. 13, honoring resident Joni Breves for the role she played in the real-life events the film portrays.

The screening will bring together Breves’ friends and family ahead of the film’s national theatrical release 3 p.m. Nov. 13. She is portrayed in the film by actress Roberta Colindrez.

“Being Heumann” tells the story of Judith Heumann, a disability rights advocate and driving force behind the legislation that became the Americans with Disabilities Act. Paralyzed by polio as an infant, Heumann grew up in a world that often failed to recognize the rights, and even the basic worth, of people with disabilities. She crossed the stage to receive her high school diploma carried by her father, and spent the rest of her life refusing to accept anything less than equal rights for every person living with a disability.
