Surprise motorists are noticing a little more color at 10 intersections along Bell Road.
Ten traffic cabinets along Bell have been transformed into pieces of art, displaying the works of local artists in the form of vinyl wraps.
Each artist worked with the community and businesses near their traffic cabinet to get input on design, ensuring the final artwork was customized for each location, representing an aspect of Surprise culture.
This project brings art, creativity and color from the east to west of the city. The goal was to increase access to the arts in Surprise, and also to support our local creative economy with an arts opportunity for West-Valley based artists.
Artists were selected in spring 2023, through a competitive process by a panel of five community members including residents and business owners who live or work on Bell, artists and a representative from the Arts and Cultural Advisory Commission.
Finalists were selected based on the quality and creativity of their past work as well as their ability to engage with community in the design process.
The following are the locations and artists for the colorful cabinet locations on Bell:
The city is planning for a second round of traffic cabinet artwork to be displayed on Cactus Road in 2025.
A call for artists is currently open and seeking applications for West Valley visual artists (west of I-17).
