Sun City West business group to conduct school drive

Follows initial event for blood, food

After hosting a success blood and food drive, the Alliance of Business and Community in Sun City West will host another event.

This time, in addition to a blood drive, the group will host a back to school drive to benefit Eve’s Place. The dual drives are scheduled 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 at Briarwood Country Club, 20800 N. 135th Ave., Sun City West.

“Because of the positive outcome of the first blood drive, Vitalant asked us to do it again,” Danielle Bagwell of the ABCs stated in an email.

The group continues to brainstorm ways to help during the COVID-19 pandemic, she added.

For residents who want to donate blood, they can set up an appointment by visiting bloodhero.com or calling 877-258-4825 and using sponsor code SCWABC. Blood donors who wish can have their blod tested for COVID-19 antibodies.

Residents who have items to donate to Eve’s Place are asked to make advance appointments to drop off their contributions as a way to maintain social distancing. All donors, for blood or to Eve’s Place, are required to wear a face mask.

Items needed for the back to school drive include backpacks, filler paper, earbuds, mouse pads, graph paper, pencil punches, three-ring binders, flash drives, black and blue pens, spiral notebooks, No. 2 pencils with erasers, glue sticks or bottles, markers or colored pencils, composition notebooks, reusable water bottles, mini laptops or tablets, Jetpack or WiFi, wireless mouse, scientific calculator and graphing calculator. Verizon gift cards for Internet service will also be accepted. A card with $65 provides unlimited data for one month. Other gift cards are also welcome.

Eve’s Place Community Services, 10448 W. Coggins Drive, Sun City offers assistance for victims of domestic, sexual and teen dating abuse in Maricopa County. Each year, Eve’s Place Community Services conducts a back-to-school drive in hopes of helping displaced families with children who are going back to school. This school year it’s even more imperative for donations. Due to COVID-19, school districts are offering “virtual learning” as a safe option for returning to school. The items needed for this safe learning option are unprovided by schools.
