Sun City performer nominated for two AriZoni Awards

Posted

Bobby Havens, a Sun City resident and member of the Sun City Players Community Theater, has been nominated for two AriZoni Theater Awards of Excellence in the 2021-22 season.

Havens was nominated for Best Actor in a Major Role (Morrie Schwartz in “Tuesdays with Morrie” at Desert Stages Theatre in Scottsdale) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Tony Reilly in “Outside Mulingar” at Stage Left Productions in Surprise).

More than 30 Valley theaters (meeting specific criteria) are adjudicated by the AriZoni Theater Awards of Excellence each year. In a normal year, they adjudicate over 200 productions and 1,000 Valley performers in each category. Five trained adjudicators are randomly assigned to each of the 200-plus productions and each adjudicator uses a detailed rubrics for their adjudication. Tabulation of the adjudicators scores are performed by third party accountants and the results presented to the AriZoni board. The board then uses the resulting scores to nominate ten performers in each category (1%). Havens was one of the ten in each of the above categories.

Award recipients will be announced at the Oct. 3 AriZoni Awards ceremony at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets may be purchased at scottsdaleperformingarts.org.

“I am humbled, honored and grateful to be nominated for these prestigious AriZonis,” stated Havens. “Both were bucket list roles for me, which makes these nominations even more memorable. I want to thank the AriZoni board and their adjudicators for this honor. And I want to thank my friends at Sun City Players Community Theater for their ongoing support.”

“Tuesdays with Morrie” also received a nomination for Best Director and Best Production of a play. And “Outside Mulingar” was nominated for Best production of a play.

Havens’s next performance will be at Sun City Players Community Theater where he will portray Curt Logan in “Don’t Talk to the Actors,” directed by Joyce Wood. Performance dates are Oct. 21-30. Tickets may be purchased at suncityplayerscommunitytheater.org.
