Residents unhappy with some road dips

MCDOT said necessary to save pavement

Posted

Larry Woods, Sun City West resident, said the dip in the road turning onto Horseman Lane from 151st Avenue is a nuisance, and wondered why it was necessary.

Mr. Woods said that intersection is a gateway to about 300 homes and many other drivers agree with him about the depression in the road.

Bryan Pahia, Maricopa County Department of Transportation public information officer, said the concrete valley gutter is necessary to control the flow of runoff water to the closest drain, which is very near the intersection.

In addition to some intersections where there are similar concrete valley flow designs, many roadways in the Sun Cities have concrete lined inverted crowns. These low spots in the center of the road help control the flow of runoff to larger drainage areas.

Mr. Pahia said the runoff areas are concrete because they handle the water flow much better than asphalt which would require considerable maintenance.

In response to Mr. Woods’ concerns, Mr. Pahia said he forwarded the information to a MCDOT maintenance crew in the Northwest Yard to have them look at the area.
