Broekemeier: Don't feed the wildlife letter

Posted

Thank you for bringing an important topic to light addressing the Sun City issues with coyotes. While not feeding the coyotes helps in controlling coyotes within Sun City, it is also important to recognize now that we apparently have some resident packs becoming more of a nuisance to homeowners. After a neighbor’s dog was killed a couple years ago, I called and spoke to someone at the RCSC offices about the coyote problem. He informed me that what we have are “transient” packs, stating that they come up from a wash for a couple of days and move on. Nothing could be done.

Two coyote “pups” were born on someone’s patio near our home. These two coyotes and their mother now consider the golf course their home turf and have attracted additional pack members to the neighborhood. They also show little fear of humans. Larger groups of coyotes are now being noted, along with more frequent encounters, both visually and during nighttime hours when they hunt for prey.

This should not be tolerated in a metro area. This is more of a concern since the recent three human attacks by coyotes in north metro. They have become a menace to both pet owners and homeowners alike. I suggest a plan to trap and relocate nuisance, non-transient coyotes to mitigate the problem.
