Tennis aficionado takes bronze in senior games

Posted

Dennis Irwin, of Sun City West, recently competed in a tennis tournament at the National Senior Games in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and came home with the bronze medal.

Irwin normally competed with a man from Nebraska, but due to illness that individual is no longer able to play tennis so he teamed up with Ben Chang from Maryland.

Irwin has medaled the past three National Senior Games he has competed in including National Champion in 2015 at the University of Minnesota. He played quite a few years on a USTA 8.0 Nebraska team that won the Missouri Valley tennis tournament for so many years that they banned them for one year competing as a team.

The Nebraska team went to national tournaments (for winning the Missouri Valley) in Scottsdale, Louisville and Daytona Beach. Irwin and his partner went undefeated for three years in the Missouri Valley.

Before moving to Sun City West, Irwin sold his antique tennis collection, which included more than 135 tennis rackets dating back to 1880s and more than 135 tennis ball containers (many unopened) dating back to 1907.
