Sun City swimmers go for distance

A group of Sun City swimmers recently took on one of the toughest challenges in the pool at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center near Tucson. Judy Roy, Jody Cline, Leslie Nock and Rick Hanan each completed the distance freestyle swimmers pentathlon.

This includes five freestyle races in a single day: a 1,000 yard swim, a 500 yard swim, a 200 yard swim, a 100 yard swim and a 50 yard sprint.

Lynette Washburn completed the medley pentathlon, swimming 50 yards in all four strokes — freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, plus a 100 yard individual medley. Caryn Bender and Larry Vose also competed, taking on fewer than five events.

The Starrs workout 7-9 a.m. Monday-Friday at the Bell pool.
