Sun City SilverStones name artist of the month
Posted
Barbara Kessler is the SilverStones Club’s featured artist for March. She makes necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
Ms. Kessler starts with a spool of wire and makes her own jump rings of various sizes, using various types of wire such as silver copper and bronze mostly. Linking them together in creative patterns is called chaining, and she has become a leader in this art form, so much so that she is now the chaining instructor for the club.
“I came to Sun City as a renter with my husband in 2011,” stated Ms. Kessler. “We liked what we saw so we purchased a home in 2012 and became snowbirds. I visited several clubs trying to decide what I wanted to try and found Sundial SilverStones. After trying several different crafts, I found a niche in chain making. One thing about it, there are always different patterns to learn. The internet offers several sites with tutorials for everyone from the novice to the advanced. I find myself wanting to see how small I can make a pattern and still get it to work. Just because a pattern looks good in a picture with one size rings does not mean I will like it when I try it.”
Ms. Kessler said there are several members of the club who also do chain making.
“I try to do patterns that no one else is doing,” she stated. “I want my work to be unique. When other member of the club see an item in our shop, they should be able to guess it was made by me.”
