Sun City Hikers participated this month in trail maintenance at the White Tank Mountain Regional Park.

Coordinated by the club’s Conservation Coordinator Bill Pope, club volunteers helped to buffer up the recently concreted Waterfall Trail. Supported by park personnel, volunteers hauled granite aggregate to locations along the popular trail, adding it to the berms for safety and to make it aesthetically pleasing. Modifications were made to help ensure drainage when it rains.

“This helps us to continue to provide properly maintained trails to our park visitors,” said Dove Luidhardt, park supervisor. “The Sun City Hikers donate their time and expertise annually at the park, and we greatly appreciate their efforts.”

In addition to berm work, volunteers removed large rocks from the trail bed, dug rain bars and replaced trail tread with granite aggregate.

One of the many parks in the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation system, White Tank Park is located in the West Valley near Waddell. The park offers a variety of challenging trails, but it also has two barrier-free trails. One such trail is the first one-half mile of the Waterfall Trail.

Jonathan McKelvey, White Tank’s trail maintenance technician, provided tools, materials and expert oversight of the work. Trails require constant maintenance due to usage and weather, thus all trail systems in Arizona rely heavily on volunteers, such as the Sun City Hikers. In addition to volunteering at the White Tank park, the club also does trail maintenance and invasive vegetation removal at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation area in Cave Creek.

The club will conduct its annual banquet Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Palmbrook Country Club, 9350 W. Greenway Road, with featured guest speaker Charles Liu, author and global hiker.

The Sun City Hikers is a non-chartered club and membership is open to anyone 55-plus, regardless of where they live. To learn how to become a member or to get more information, visit suncityhikers.org.
