The Sundial Recreation Center’s SilverStones Club has selected Glynis Wood as its latest featured artist.
Wood, who is originally from Kansas, has been in Sun City for seven years and is also a member of the Sun City Hatha Yoga Club. She was drawn to SilverStones by a desire to learn glass fusion that developed after going to craft sales and buying some items.
“I wanted to learn it myself,” she said.
When she joined SilverStones about a year ago, Wood pursued that interest by taking a beginner glass fusion class.
“I didn’t know anything about glass fusion, but my instructors, Janet Allison and Dawn Saffel, made it so fun and we made two projects each day to take home,” she said.
Since then, Wood has learned how to operate the kiln and is currently the Saturday kiln operator.
Wood also enjoys gardening and that has helped inspire some of her artistic creations.
“My favorite is a bunny garden stake that I made for Easter. It turned out so cute, I just love it,” she said.
Wood loves to “pretty-up” her garden with other stakes that include butterflies, birds and bird houses. She also puts garden scenery on glass that she can display on stands. When asked about her inspiration or motivation for her creations, Wood said, “I get a lot of ideas from Pinterest and I also enjoy looking at items the other club members make.” She feels that her creations show “that I am willing to try different techniques and colors, even if they don’t quite turn out as I thought they would.”
Wood also stated her favorite part of her new craft is “putting the final pieces together and seeing the end results after it has been tacked or fused in the kiln.” She gets great satisfaction in knowing “I made that.” Her enthusiasm for her new hobby is evident in her answer to the question about how she feels while making an item. She simply stated, “Happy – I look forward to going to the club.”
The SilverStones help new members get started and offers classes in lapidary, silver work, lost wax casting, fused glass, chaining and wire wrap. Cost is $15 a year to join and classes are $10-$50, plus the cost of materials. Tools and equipment are provided by the club. The club also has a retail store.
