The Community Church of Sun City, formerly the Congregational Church of Sun City, will celebrate its 50th anniversary 9:30 a.m. May 3.
The church, which traces its heritage to pilgrims who sought religious freedom, adheres to “faith, fellowship and freedom as the congregational way.”
The Rev. Dr. John Alexander was the founding minister and the first service was Sunday, May 2, 1976 with the sermon, “Great Expectations!” From 1976 to 1981, the congregation met at various locations in Sun City and grew from five members to 188. Land was purchased in 1979 at 18401 N. 99th Ave. and a groundbreaking took place March 29, 1981. The sanctuary opened that year and the Fellowship Hall was completed in 1985.
