RCSC wants volunteers for Mountain View committee in Sun City

Will help determine scope of renovations

Recreation Centers of Sun City officials are looking for some dedicated volunteers from the community to help them determine the scope of renovations at Mountain View Recreation Center, 9749 N. 107th Ave.

The board voted by a slim 5-4 margin Jan. 13 to form an ad hoc committee to research the options for the structure, one of the older rec centers in the age restricted community. Committee applications are available at the board offices in the Lakeview Recreation Center, 10626 W. Thunderbird Blvd.

“This should not take long,” Rich Hoffer, RCSC board member and former Long Range Planning Committee member, said. “I would think we would have the members selected in two weeks and their work should not take more than three months.”

In his motion to the board, Mr. Hoffer said the committee should present its findings on or before May 15.

While the board will begin taking committee applications, the motion must be approved in two more board readings before it is officially a part of the process.

RCSC officials conducted two town hall meeting in October 2018 to gather resident input on what should be included in a Mountain View renovation. That input was put together by the Long Range Planning Committee in a report to the board December 2018. Five specific recommendations and one request was made. The request was to establish an ad hoc committee at that time, but the idea was rejected.

The two main purposes suggested by residents at the town halls was to include a professional theatrical performing arts center in the plans and adding more pickleball courts at the center. Swimmers also wanted pool improvements and another group of residents wanted an indoor multi-purpose gymnasium for basketball and volleyball.

The vote to establish the ad hoc committee now was close and the differences centered around who would be involved in the planning process.

“I want the Long Range Planning Committee to continue its involvement to see the project through,” said RCSC board member Michael Ege.

The makeup of the ad hoc committee was also a debated topic.

“It should include people from the interest groups — theater, pickleball, swimmers, etc.” said RCSC board member Diana Graettinger.

Mr. Hoffer agreed, but believes the LRP should not be involved from here on. He said the panel already wrote a detailed report and should be looking to future planning, not dwelling on the past.

The RCSC board will consider the issue again at its next board meeting, 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 in the auditorium at Sundial Recreation Center, 14801 N. 103rd Ave.
