The following artists have donated artwork for the Palo Verde Artists’ annual show and sale 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23, at the Sundial Recreation Center, 14801 N. 103rd Ave.
Emily Fina is from Minnesota by way of Seattle, where she spent many years in the healthcare field. During a visit to Sun City, she was captivated by the art community and sunny skies and decided to escape the gray skies of the Seattle area. After moving, she began taking art classes to improve her skills and learn from others. Although she has painted with pastels, she paints primarily in watercolor. Her interpretations of dogs, birds, and flowers are loose and delicate. “I love color and love the calm and peace creating a picture gives,” Fina stated.
Nedda Oswald, a lifelong and professionally trained artist is an accomplished oil and watercolor artist but her creativity also extends to ceramic pottery, sculpture and mixed media. A teacher for more than 30 years, her students included elementary, middle school, high school and adult learners. She recently retired to Sun City from the Salt Lake City and she currently teaches beginning watercolor for Palo Verde Artists.
Josh Thompson, a professional Sun City artist, began painting when he was 13 and attended a two-week summer parks program. Although he has taken a few classes, he is primarily self-taught. Thompson favors acrylics although he has worked in pen and ink, watercolors and mixed media. He is the recipient of many awards and has been juried into shows throughout the Valley, Sedona and in Prescott, where he was the featured artist in a show entitled “Eclectic Windows.”
Janice Rouen Lydon moved to Arizona and fell in love with it. Now she paints the things she loves in Arizona. “Painting is a fantastic way to spend time and to enjoy what’s around you,” she said. A graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Lydon does most of her work in watercolor; often animals or Native Americans are her subjects.
Raffle tickets will be available for $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be on Saturday, March 23, at the conclusion of the show. Winners need not be present to win. Show attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase many of the artworks that will be on display during the show in the Palo Verde Artists club room.
Membership in Palo Verde Artists is $10 per year and is open to Recreation Centers of Sun City cardholders only.
