If you are a Sun City resident, pay your fee

Posted

OPINION — I would like to add my voice to that of others suggesting and supporting Recreation Centers of Sun City annual fees being assessed per resident rather than per household.

Rising prices is a trend none of us can ignore; that’s the world we live in. There’s another trend that I suggest Sun City acknowledge — that of two-income households.

This trend attracted notice in the 1960s and by 1970, both spouses in married couple families were employed in 40% of households. Since then, that number has risen and gained stability. Census data on both spouses working in married couple families:

1980 — 52%
1990 — 59%
2000 — 60%
2010 — 54%
2020 — 48%; 59% of co-habiting couples both working
2025 — 62%

The bottom line: for almost 50 years, between 48% and 62% of households in the U.S. with two married/co-habiting adults have enjoyed two incomes. This reality should be reflected in RCSC fees.

I agree with Martha Amabile’s letter that couples in Sun City don’t need a break on their RCSC fees and with LM Anderson’s letter that an unfair burden has been carried by single-member households for too many years.

If you are a resident of Sun City, pay your fee. Boom. With 38,138 residents, if we all just paid the current annual fee of $680, the result is $25,933,840 — well above the 2026 property assessments operating budget of $16,037,144.

I have relied heavily on Anderson’s numbers and ask for correction of those by RCSC board if in error.
