Work continues on a new fire station for the Sun City Fire District.

The district board approved the hiring of Spearman as the architect for the structure, to be built on the northwest corner of 111th and Michigan avenues in Youngtown.

Fire officials were expected to last week send out requests for qualifications for contractors for the project.

The new station will replace the one now used at 13013 N. 111th Ave.

The Sun City Fire and Medical department has a truck out of service.

The department’s ladder truck is down because of a recent inspection. Cracks were discovered on the ladder during the inspection and that prompted the action to pull it out of service. But fire officials do not believe the truck will be in need of repair.

Mike Thompson, Sun City fire chief, said cracks such as those discovered are typically only in the epoxy paint used on the ladder. Once it is sanded down to bare metal usually no cracks are found.
