Vigil for election peace set for Sunday

Event to promote secure, fair and safe elections at Downtown Phoenix church

An interfaith prayer vigil, slated for Sunday afternoon at a church in Downtown Phoenix,  hopes to encourage peace during the upcoming election year.

The "Interfaith Prayer Vigil for Secure, Fair and Safe Elections" is set for 4 p.m. at the First Institutional Baptist Church, 1141 E. Jefferson Street, Phoenix.

Don Henninger, co-director of the Arizona Democracy Resilience Network, said the idea for the day of prayer started within the ADRN network and then was planned with help from the Arizona Faith Network and Anne Ellsworth, an Episcopal priest from Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church.

"Of the 300 members of our statewide network, nearly 70 are faith leaders," Henninger said. "We have discovered that there is a real concern among faith communities about the future of our democracy and the importance of having fair, safe and secure elections, and the values associated with that."

The Day of Prayer is intentionally scheduled for exactly one year before Nov. 5, 2024 elections across the U.S. Henniger said it's intended to give people of faith  — all faiths — a chance to pause and pray for a peaceful year ahead.

"We are doing this event in Phoenix on Sunday and a similar event is planned for later this month in Tucson,"  Henninger said.

He said security will be  present for Sunday's vigil.

Scheduled speakers at the vigil include Rev. Jennifer A. Reddall of theEpiscopal Diocese of Arizona. Rev. John P. Dolan of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix and the Rev. Dr. Cathy Clardy Patterson, vice chair of the African American Christian Clergy Coalition
