Valley Metro, Phoenix want riders’ ideas on regional fare policy

Posted

Valley Metro and the Phoenix Public Transit Department are asking for comments from riders on proposed changes to the regional fare policy.

The effort is part of the Fare Technology Modernization project and “updates to the fare structure are needed to reflect the upcoming technology improvements being made to the fare collection system,” officials said in a release.

“Fares are not proposed for increase, but rather are being modified to reflect the system’s upgrades,” the release stated.

Proposed changes include:

Smart Fare
Local riders purchasing passes now must pay the full upfront cost: $4 for a one-day pass, $20 for a one-week pass, or $64 for a 31-day pass.
With Smart Fare, riders will add money to their transit account, scan their phone or tap their reloadable fare card every time they board, and the appropriate fare will be deducted from their account.

Regardless of how many trips they take, local bus and light rail riders paying full fare will not pay more than $4 per day, $20 per week or $64 per calendar month. Express and RAPID riders will not pay more than $6.50 per day or $104 per calendar month, officials said.

Reloadable Copper Card
In late 2023/early 2024, riders will have the option of using a Copper card (full or reduced fare), the mobile app (full or reduced fare) or cash.
The Copper card is a reloadable smartcard that will serve as a rider’s transit fare. The cards can be purchased and value loaded at fare vending machines, retail locations and on the new fare website, according to the release. All Platinum Pass holders will continue to be able to use their pass until new ones are distributed.

Reduced Fare Account Requirement
All riders who are eligible for reduced fare will be required to have a reduced fare account to access the Smart Fare program at the reduced fare rate. Qualified riders will be able to apply for reduced fare via a new fare website or in person at the Mobility Center.

Through Friday, Aug. 18, riders can provide feedback by:
• Completing a survey at:  https://westgroup.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eDlVfrbqwwGWqkS?SOURCE=Phoenix.
• Participating in a hybrid public hearing in-person or virtually 5-6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2:  https://www.valleymetro.org/event/fare-system-upgrades-public-hearing/2023/08/02.
• Call Valley Metro public hearing voicemail: 602-322-4479
• Email: input@valleymetro.org
• Mail: Valley Metro ATTN: Community Relations

In-person outreach will be conducted during the public comment period on buses and light rail and streetcar vehicles.
