Police said a man who fled from Chandler police in a vehicle while dragging an officer was arrested Wednesday, according to the Gila River Police Department.

Just after 3 p.m. Jan. 10, Gila River police on Facebook said 27-year-old Allen Pedro had been located and arrested.

The Chandler Police Department on Twitter said Mr. Pedro was taken into custody around 2:45 p.m. He had self-surrendered to Chandler detectives in the area of Interstate 10 and Chandler Boulevard.

Mr. Pedro had last been seen walking on the Gila River Indian Community along State Route 586 after leaving the scene of an incident with a Chandler officer on Monday Jan. 8.

According to police, an officer suffered minor injuries after being dragged by a car while making a traffic stop of vehicle on Riggs Road, east of Arizona Avenue.

Police said a back-up officer fired at the vehicle after it turned around the drove toward the second officer.

It’s not known whether Mr. Pedro was injured.

A 40-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car was arrested without incident prior to Mr. Pedro’s escape. Both had valid arrest warrants.

During the initial encounter, a patrol officer asked Mr. Pedro to exit the vehicle. However, Mr. Pedro did not comply, resulting in a brief struggle between him and the officer, according to a release.

During the struggle, Mr. Pedro shifted the vehicle into drive and accelerated away, dragging the officer along the side of the vehicle. The back-up officer then ran after Mr. Pedro.

While driving eastbound through a break in the raised median, Mr. Pedro continued in the westbound lanes of Riggs Road before making a U-turn near a railroad crossing. Now traveling westbound, he drove straight at the back-up officer, who fired multiple rounds at Mr. Pedro, according to police.

Mr. Pedro continued driving to Arizona Avenue, where he turned southbound and proceeded to the junction with State Route 587. Once there, he drove about a half-mile south before abandoning the vehicle along the side of the highway, where officers from the Gila River Police Department located it.

Officers from Chandler and Gila River, along with deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, troopers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and agents from the FBI conducted a thorough ground search in the desert west of the abandoned vehicle with support from air units and K-9s.

Officials canceled a Blue Alert that had been put out after Mr. Pedro had fled from officers.

Silent Witness was offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to his arrest.
