There are plenty of ways to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this month in Glendale.

Although registration is full for the city’s official MLK Day of Service this Saturday at Sahuaro Ranch Park, residents can still contribute in another way. Residents are invited to drop off excess citrus from their property and donate it to the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. Bring freshly picked citrus (all varieties) to Sahuaro Ranch Park (9802 N. 59th Ave.) or Manistee Ranch Park (5127 W. Northern Ave.) between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Jan. 13.

Meanwhile, ASU West in Glendale will host its 33rd Annual MLK March on West.

The tradition dating back to 1991 reaches middle school students, members of the ASU community and the public to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and to understand the history-changing 1963 March on Washington.

This year’s edition goes from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Jan. 17 in the Kiva Courtyard on the campus located at 4701 W. Thunderbird Road.

The event includes educational presentations about the history of the civil rights movement, a musical program, and an inspirational rendition of the “I Have a Dream” speech by ASU faculty member Charles St. Clair.

Student breakout sessions will take place with ASU faculty and staff where they focus on the civil rights landscape of unique cities across the country as they were back in 1963. Eight representative cities and their part in the civil rights movement are presented by ASU faculty members who produced the in-depth content.
