Truck driver viewing Tik Tok sentenced for crash that killed 5 on I-10: MCAO

A 38-year-old man who authorities said was viewing Tik Tok while drive along Interstate 10 has been sentenced to 22½ years in prison for causing a six-vehicle collision that killed five people.

On Jan. 12, 2023, Danny Glen Tiner was driving a semi-truck east on I-10 near Wildhorse Pass Boulevard. GPS data showed his truck was traveling 68 mph in a 55 mph construction zone, according to a release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

The truck he was driving crashed into stopped traffic.

Some of the vehicles caught fire, and five people died at the scene, officials said.

Digital forensic data showed Tiner “accessed at least four separate Tik Tok videos” within seconds of the crash.

“To choose to access social media while driving, placing the lives of others on the line, is reckless," Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said.

"Five families are living through the pain of losing a loved one. While the justice system can never relieve that pain, it can hold the person responsible accountable. We achieved that goal.”
