A 73-year-old man is in custody after police said he accidentally drove into the Elks Lodge, 2455 N. Apache Trail, a crash that injured 30 people.
Thomas Edward Kain is suspected of driving the truck that crashed into the building just after 8:25 p.m. Sept. 7, police said. Alcohol was a contributing factor in the collision, according to a statement released on Facebook by the Apache Junction Police Department.
Ten people were taken to hospitals by ambulance, while 15 others received treatment at the scene for minor injuries, police said, adding that at least five other people drove themselves to hospitals for minor injuries.
“One of the individuals is in critical but stable condition. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this incident and wish all a speedy recovery,” police stated on Facebook
Authorities said those involved have been interviewed, and the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control is doing a separate investigation.
