Surprise has history of interesting elections

First one happened 61 years ago

Three weeks before Christmas in 1960, a small group of Maricopa Country residents had a big decision to make.

In order to avoid being annexed by El Mirage, residents in an unincorporated area needed to decide whether to merge with North El Mirage to create a new town named Surprise.

A total of 153 people trekked to Williams Market on Grand Avenue to cast a vote, where 73.9% of them voted in favor of making Surprise official.
