Sunday morning shooting at Buckeye home leaves man in critical condition

Buckeye police are investigating a shooting Sunday morning after a homeowner told them he fired a gun at a man who ignored his commands to leave his property near 237th Avenue and Mohave Street, authorities said.

The shooting occurred just before 2:30 a.m. Jan. 7. Officers responded to a home and saw the homeowner walking out of the house with his hands up, police said.

He was detained, and officers searched the property, finding a man in his early 20’s in the backyard with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to a hospital and was in critical condition, police said.

The homeowner told investigators he and his family were asleep when they heard the doorbell.

“He says he grabbed a handgun and looked out the front window but didn’t see anyone there,” a Buckeye Police Department release stated.

“Then, the homeowner says, he heard noise coming from the back of the house so he went to the back door, opened it and confronted an unknown man.”

The homeowner, who police said is in his 30’s, told investigators the man ignored commands to leave and walked toward him. The homeowner said he fired a shot, hitting the man in the chest, according to the release.
