Gypsy folk duo Sugar Still releases their third studio album, Go, on March 1. And will be playing at Helio Basin Brewing, located at 3935 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018, on Saturday, March 18 at 6 p.m.
The ten lusty, polished tracks were written and recorded during their 2016 US tour, each one as unique as the location where it was written. Since starting out in 2015, their cowriting has morphed into “gypsy folk”: a marriage of Charlie Cheney’s roots-blues storytelling and Sarah Blick’s Classical upbringing with influences like Devil Makes Tree (“Blushing Rose”), Stevie Wonder (“Tiny Turns”), Jefferson Airplane (“Charlotte”), Gillian Welch (“Anvils”) and more, all with ripping violin, percussive guitar, whiskey-soaked harmonies, and a signature confident vulnerability. They have come a long way from meeting in a dive bar over a shot of Jameson and have no plans of stopping their perpetual tour since logging over 150 shows in 2016 alone.
The 2017 tour to support this album starts in Taos, New Mexico March 1. Go is a vulnerable snapshot of Sugar Still at a crossroads, transitioning between the road-tested acoustic duo sound and the new fully fleshed-out band sound of producer Greg D’Alessio’s remixes.
Sugar Still performed over 80 shows in 2015 in the midwest, and over 150 shows in 2016 in 26 states and Canada. California native Sarah Blick is a graduate of conservatory training in Classical violin from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, and is a busy studio session musician and live performer in a long list of Chicago bands. Charlie Cheney is a prolific performing songwriter with over 1000 songs to his credit with artists as diverse as Jackson Browne, Victoria Williams, pAt mAcdonald, members of Living Colour, Little Feat, Jane’s Addiction, and Nine Inch Nails, and has toured 49 states and Europe. Together Blick and Cheney have an undeniable musical energy and stage chemistry.
