SURPRISE - Dr. Stuart (Randy) Winston, a neurosurgeon and resident of Surprise, AZ, and Fargo, ND, died unexpectedly on Nov. 13, 2016, at the age of 79 while playing golf in Scottsdale, AZ. Randy was born in Chicago, IL, on July 27, 1937. He earned his bachelor of arts from Northwestern University, Doctor of Medicine from Chicago Medical School, and completed a neurosurgery residency at Northwestern University. He served in the US Army at Tripler U.S. Army Hospital in Honolulu, HI. Randy practiced in Lincoln, NE, Waterloo and Des Moines, IA, and at Barrow Neurosurgical Associates in Phoenix, AZ, before retiring. He married Norma Coupland in Honolulu, HI, on March 7, 1959. Subsequently, they welcomed three beautiful daughters who were the most important part of his life. On October 19, 1991, he married Dr. Jane Dietz in Fargo, ND. Randy had a beautiful singing voice and loved music. A true renaissance man, he was passionate about many subjects, including the arts, philosophy, golf, fishing, and technology. He was a lifelong learner and loved to master new disciplines. He served as a docent (Las Guias) at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, and was a board member at Benevilla in Surprise, AZ. Randy is survived by his wife Jane (Dietz) Winston; Norma (Coupland) Winston, St. George, UT; his daughters Margaret (Tony) Puls, Des Moines, IA; Leslie (Aaron Biesbrock) Winston, Maineville, OH; Heather (Ryan Mapus) Winston, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren Adam (Danielle Neary) Puls, Megan Puls, Kellen Biesbrock, and Devin Biesbrock; and his sister Penny (Winston) Stein, St. Louis, MO. He was predeceased by his parents Bernice and Harold Winston. His ashes will be inurned at Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel in Sun City West, AZ. Memorial reception will be held on Friday, November 18th, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Briarwood Country Club. In lieu of flowers, his family designates donations to Benevilla of Surprise.
