Mimi Michelle Ohms passed away on May 4, 2026, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born September 15, 1949, in Palo Alto, California. She attended Woodside High School and later graduated from Arizona State University with plans to become a teacher. Although life ultimately took her in a different direction, she built a meaningful career at the VA Hospital, where she worked for more than 30 years. Mimi was remarkably capable and endlessly curious, with an amazing ability to absorb information and wear many hats. Through her years at the VA, she developed an impressive knowledge of medicine, health care, and law. Family affectionately nicknamed her “Dr. Mimi” because of her understanding of medical conditions most people could barely pronounce. Her organizational skills later served her well in a second career as a property manager in Mountain View, California. Later in life, Mimi moved to Sun City, Arizona. After seeing the recreation center pool for the first time, she enthusiastically declared, “Flipper has found a new home.” Anyone who knew Mimi understood exactly what she meant. Swimming was more than exercise to her—it was a passion that brought her fitness, friendship, and joy. If there is such a thing as coming back in another life, many would agree that Mimi would return as a dolphin. Mimi was a woman of Christian faith and attended Grace Bible Church, where she sang in the choir. She loved a wide variety of music, from traditional hymns to heavy metal. She also loved Hawaii, chocolate, shoes, Mexican food, shopping, art festivals, and absolutely anything in leopard print. Mimi’s sense of humor was one of her defining qualities. Her mischievous sense of humor, and ability to find the absurd in everyday life brought joy to those around her. She loved her family deeply and was a devoted aunt to her niece and nephew. When they were children, she took great pleasure in giving gifts that were hilarious and occasionally outrageous. In 2023, Mimi began her battle with pancreatic cancer. Throughout her illness, she carried herself with grace, dignity, and remarkable strength. Even during the most difficult moments, she found ways to bring humor and light to those around her. Mimi was preceded in death by her parents, Ivan and Lorraine Ohms; her brother, Paul Ohms; and her fearless feline companions, Francis and Nacho. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Sandi Ohms; her niece, Cassie Ohms; her nephew, Jason Ohms; her longtime dear friend, Lynn McNerney; and her beloved cat, Smokey. Mimi leaves behind memories filled with laughter. Many of us find comfort imagining Mimi reunited with her loved ones, sharing laughter once again. While we will miss her deeply, we take comfort in knowing that Flipper finally found her way home. The Ohms family will hold a private memorial service in Palo Alto, California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mimi’s memory to Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue, one of her favorite charities.
