The Thursday night movies, under the sponsorship of the Friends of the R.H. Johnson Library, started in 1980 and were shown in the Sun City West R.H Johnson Library, 13801 W. Meeker Blvd.

In 1984 a $1 donation was requested to help cover expenses. The movies became so popular with Sun City West residents, the movies were moved first into the Beardsley Park Music Room, 12755 W. Beardsley Road, then to the lecture hall at R.H. Johnson Recreation Center, 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd.

In 1989, to accommodate a growing number of attendees, the move was made to Stardust Theater, 14401 R.H. Johnson Blvd. In the early 2000s the donation fee was increased to $2 to help with the cost of projection equipment and the movie license, as well as books and videos for the R.H. Johnson Library.

The donation fee is now being raised to $3 per person and will begin Thursday, Aug. 4.
