Rumors of ‘critical race theory’ divide Scottsdale school community

Even after the Scottsdale Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Scott A. Menzel addressed certain rumors circulating — from the board meeting in secret to teaching critical race theory — he and board members were met by parents’ passionate pleas about educating children on equality, current events and learning material.

During the June 22 regular meeting, Menzel said he recently received a Let’s Talk dialogue indicating a group of parents in the community alleged that following the May 18 board meeting, the board secretly met and approved CRT for the district.

“I think it is really important to be clear that the governing board did not have a secret meeting. We follow Arizona’s open meeting laws — that we did have a properly reconvened meeting on May 24 that was held virtually so we can complete the district’s business — and there has not been an agenda item with the topic of critical race on it.
