Roberson, Nelson lead No. 4 Duke past Green Bay to open season
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Arianna Roberson had 15 points and four blocked shots while No. 4 Duke took control after halftime to beat Green Bay 76-60 in Tuesday night’s opener for both teams.
Riley Nelson also scored 15 for the Blue Devils, the preseason favorite to win a third straight Atlantic Coast Conference title. Duke played without preseason all-ACC pick Toby Fournier, with coach Kara Lawson saying afterward that the 6-foot-2 forward who was last year’s leading scorer (17.3) and rebounder (7.9) is dealing with a lower-leg injury. Lawson said she hopes Fournier is back soon but said there is no specific timetable yet.
Duke had a tussle on its hands in the first half, leading just 33-31 at halftime against the preseason pick to win the Horizon League title for a fourth straight year.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Arianna Roberson had 15 points and four blocked shots while No. 4 Duke took control after halftime to beat Green Bay 76-60 in Tuesday night’s opener for both teams.

Duke had a tussle on its hands in the first half, leading just 33-31 at halftime against the preseason pick to win the Horizon League title for a fourth straight year.
But the Blue Devils did a better job asserting themselves inside after halftime, going from managing zero points in the paint in the second quarter to scoring 16 in the third. Throw in a defensive effort that held the Phoenix without a basket for the first six-plus minutes of the period, and the Blue Devils were able to stretch out their margin to 49-37 at the 4:15 mark after layups from Jordan Wood and Nelson.
The Blue Devils would stretch that lead to 16 by late in the period on a three-point play by Wood, then didn’t let the Phoenix get closer than seven again early in the fourth quarter.
NO. 15 TCU 99, ORAL ROBERTS 43
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Laura Somfai totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead TCU to a win over Oral Roberts to start the season.
Lanie Grant and reserve Camille Williams both scored 12 points to help TCU post its largest margin of victory in a season opener. Jadyn Wooten added 10 points and eight assists.
Grant had nine points to help the Horned Frogs take a comfortable 27-9 lead after one quarter. TCU outshot Oral Roberts 65% to 25% in the first 10 minutes.
Somfai had 10 points at halftime and the TCU bench accounted for 16 more for a 46-19 advantage.
Bella Hines hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 50 with 3:15 left in the third quarter, and TCU held the Golden Eagles to six points for a 77-25 lead heading to the fourth.
Reserve Aliyah Duval led Oral Roberts with 14 points and Kayten Donley scored 13.
NO. 24 WEST VIRGINIA 68, RHODE ISLAND 64
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Gia Cooke scored a career-high 28 points, and West Virginia beat Rhode Island for its 13th straight season-opening victory.
West Virginia, which won the Big 12 Tournament last season, features two returners and 10 newcomers on a team picked to finish fourth in the conference preseason poll.
Cooke, who started 34 games and averaged a team-best 15.0 points per game last season, kept West Virginia in it early by scoring 13 points in the opening 10 minutes. She finished the half with 16 points to help West Virginia build a 39-30 lead after holding the Rams to just six points in the second quarter.
Cooke gave the Mountaineers their largest lead of the game, 60-43, with 6:28 remaining in the fourth. But West Virginia made just one of its next nine field goals as URI went on a 10-0 run to get within single digits.
After West Virginia struggled to put the game away at the free-throw line, Alex Newson sank a 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds left to get URI within four points. The Mountaineers turned it over on their inbounds pass, but Rhode Island was off on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
