Democrat Teresa Leyba Ruiz held an early lead Tuesday night in Arizona's race for superintendent of public instruction, potentially bringing a longtime classroom educator and community college administrator to the state's highest elected education office.
Ruiz received 55.4% of the vote compared with 44.5% for Republican Kimberly Yee, according to unofficial election results available at 8:34 p.m.
Ruiz, a former math teacher and Glendale Community College president, campaigned on increasing investment in public education, addressing Arizona's teacher shortage and strengthening accountability for the state's Empowerment Scholarship Account program.
