After accidentally falling down a 25-foot vertical cistern vault, which is similar to a holding tank for water, a person was recovered by local rescue teams in Scottsdale on April 12.
Scottsdale, Mesa, Peoria and Phoenix fire departments responded to a confined-space rescue located at 7475 E. Gainey Ranch Road, in Scottsdale.
The incident occurred on the property of a structure that was under construction, officials say.
According to Adam Hoster, a spokesman for Scottsdale Fire Department, the trapped individual fell approximately 25 feet down a 3-foot-wide opening.
Hoster says there was some type of plywood covering the hole, and the patient fell through the plywood.
Officials say the rescue team located and had verbal communications with the individual who was inside the cistern vault.
The technical rescue team utilized a tripod winch, which allowed for patient extraction. The tripod is a three-poled rescue device that allows rescuers to use a rope and pulley system to lower down rescuers into a hole.
Scottsdale paramedics treated and transported the patient to one of Scottsdale’s local medical facilities with non-life threatening injuries.
