Reader questions whether BNSF hub is truly ‘necessary’

OPINION — While economic development and infrastructure investment are important, David Martin’s assertion that the proposed BNSF logistics hub is necessary for growth in the Phoenix area is overstated and overlooks serious local consequences.

Growth in the region has been driven by a diverse mix of industries — technology, health care, tourism and small business — not solely by freight rail expansion. Smart, sustainable growth can and should occur without placing disproportionate burdens on specific communities.

The projected 60% increase in freight by 2045 does not automatically justify placing a massive logistics hub in a sensitive and resource-constrained area. Increased freight demand can be addressed through modernization of existing infrastructure, improved efficiency and better regional planning, not by building new large-scale facilities in vulnerable locations.
