There were some records broken and some near misses in Arizona rainfall over the past week, according to the National Weather Service.
Isaac Smith, a senior service hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, said what’s remarkable about the heavy rainfall at the end of October and start of November this year isn’t that it was the most ever or the most in so many years; it’s the timing.
“The heavy rain we received, especially here in the Valley, is very anomalous for this time of year,” Smith said. “The kind of deluge we saw (Friday night, Oct. 30) in (several places in) Scottsdale is more like the thunderstorms we see when monsoons first hit in the summer.”
