The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported nearly 1,700 confirmed cases of “explosive diarrhea” across 34 states as of mid-July, including at least 20 in Arizona, and was awaiting confirmation on an additional 5,100 cases. The illness, which the CDC says may last weeks, is caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic parasite commonly linked to contaminated fresh produce, including iceberg lettuce distributed in multiple states. As health officials work to pinpoint sources of contamination and issue precautions, what are you doing to avoid getting sick? Have you stopped eating or buying fresh produce? Are you preparing it differently? If you do get sick, will you seek treatment or will you just stay home and hope for the best?
