Police cite 2 drivers after 'driverless' FedEx truck runs into Tempe home

Posted

A FedEx driver and the driver of a car that triggered a crash Monday morning each received tickets in the collision that ended when the truck – with no one behind the steering wheel - ran into a house in Tempe, police said.

Police said the incident began when a small passenger car was traveling eastbound on Taylor Street and the driver pulled it over to the side, stopping briefly prior to making a U-turn in front of a FedEx truck that was passing the  car.

“This resulted in the FedEx truck moving to the left to prevent hitting the car prior to autocorrecting and moving back to the right of the roadway which flung the driver out of the truck,” Tempe police said in a release, adding he was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driverless FedEx truck then hit a small block wall prior to colliding with a Ford Ranger, which was pushed into a homeowner who was washing a vehicle in a driveway. The homeowner was pinned between the Ford Ranger and an Infiniti car, police said.

The FedEx truck continued a short distance where it came to a stop when it hit the front entrance of the house.

Medical aid was provided to the homeowner and the FedEx driver, who suffered minor injuries, according to the release.

The passenger car driver was cited for a moving safety violation and to the FedEx driver for not wearing a seatbelt. Impairment was not a factor, police said.
