12/05/1922 to 01/04/2016 SCOTTSDALE - Phyllis Stephens Vivian was born in Chicago, Illinois to Walter and Adeline Stephens on December 5, 1922. She grew up in Wilmette and Winnetka, Illinois, and went on to attend Colorado College, where she met her first husband, Bob Stockdale. When WWII intervened, Bob went off to war and Phyllis returned to Illinois to work for Campana during the war. After the war, they settled in Colorado Springs, and had a daughter, Cathy. Sadly, at 28, Phyllis became a widow when Bob suddenly passed away. In 1955, Phyllis and her daughter moved to Southern California where she enrolled in the prestigious Wright McMahon School. Following graduation, she landed an excellent job for the city of Rolling Hills, eventually becoming City Clerk for Palos Verdes Estates. She went on to become City Manager of Rolling Hills, a position only held once before by a woman. Phyllis then met the love of her life, Don Heyl, and their families became a blended one which included Don's three children, Lynn, Vicki and Gregg. They lived a fulfilling life for over 38 years, while Don served as Executive Vice-President and Vice-Chairman of the Board for Virco Manufacturing Corporation. Sadly, Don passed away shortly after their move to Scottsdale, Arizona. Phyllis continued to be a steward to the society she had lived in, devoting herself particularly to PEO and Christian Science. A couple of years later, she met and married James Vivian, a retired West Point Colonel, with whom she traveled extensively for the five years they enjoyed together, until Jim's passing. Once again, Phyllis's family grew to include James' children, James and Jane. Phyllis is survived by her sister, Sally; four children; five grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; several nieces and nephews, as well as two great-nieces and one great-nephew. Phyllis's family requests that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to acknowledge her may do so by making a donation in her name to Cottey College, 1000 W. Austin Blvd, Nevada, MO 64772.
