Special to Independent Newsmedia
More than 500 Valley families in need received free turkeys and more thanks to donations through the Phoenix Rescue Mission.
The nonprofit on Nov. 18 hosted its annual Thanksgiving Outreach Event to distribute the donated turkeys, non-perishables, hygiene supplies and more. The event took place at Sullivan Elementary School (2 N. 31st Ave.) in southwest Phoenix.
The event was part of the Rescue Mission’s annual Hungry for Change holiday campaign, which runs from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31.
The Rescue Mission created the campaign in 2020 to bring awareness to how society has dealt with hunger in the past – primarily by treating the symptoms of hunger without addressing the root causes that stem from a lack of vocational development, education, counseling, mental health services and other resources.
