Phoenix forms sports, events commission

Posted

The city of Phoenix and Visit Phoenix have joined to form a commission with a goal to “celebrate the city's unique culture, communities and spirit,” officials stated in a release.

The Phoenix Sports & Events Commission will work with a range of community organizations and others to extend its reach to youth, amateur and collegiate tournaments in addition to arts, culture and music events, according to the release.

The commission will operate as a division of Visit Phoenix. It will recruit an executive director and appoint an advisory board.

“Phoenix is the largest city in the country without an events-focused commission," Mayor Kate Gallego said.

“While we are no stranger to hosting world-class events, the commission will proactively attract a diverse roster of new sports, arts and cultural events."
