Override sets up future planning for Deer Valley Unified

With M&O secure, next step to focus on expected district growth up north

With the maintenance and operations override secure in Deer Valley Unified School District for the next few years, it’s time now to focus on changes coming down the road.

That was the message Superintendent Curtis Finch shared at Tuesday night’s governing board meeting, the first such meeting since Election Night on Nov. 4 secured the vote in a close call. By an unofficial margin of just 1,512 votes out of more than 50,000 cast, the district’s electorate said to continue the existing 15% M&O budget override, which provides for the district’s operating resources, including staff salaries.

The override will allow the district to exceed the amount of the budget otherwise allowed by the state by 15% for the next seven years. Population projections within the Deer Valley Unified footprint figure to change significantly based on expected growth in the northern regions of Phoenix, Peoria and Glendale.
