Approximately 3,500 gallons of nitric acid spilled into a retention basin Thursday in Buckeye, prompting responses from four West Valley hazmat teams, authorities said.
At about 2:20 p.m. March 20, personnel from the Buckeye Fire Medical Rescue Department, along with hazmat teams from the Goodyear, Surprise, Phoenix fire departments and Arizona Fire & Medical Authority responded to the leak at the Thatcher Company located at Rainbow Road between Southern and Broadway, according to a release.
The hazmat teams confirmed the scene was stable “with no adverse chemical reactions occurring,” the release from Buckeye stated.
As a precaution, RAVE alerts were sent to notify the community to avoid the area and telling residents there was no immediate danger.
Crews were conducting air quality monitoring Thursday before turning the site over to the responsible party for cleanup.
