Mosquitoes, maintenance raise concerns for Sun City golf course

Recreation Centers of Sun City officials are looking into two concerns about Riverview Golf Course, 16401 N. Del Webb Blvd., that have little to do with golf.

Resident Joseph Wallace lives in a home that fronts the course and there is a pond nearby. He believes it is responsible for the high number of mosquitoes he and his neighbors have encountered lately.

“That pond is kind of a swamp,” he said during the June 12 member/director exchange meeting.

He said there used to be a fountain in the pond that helped circulate the water, disturbing any mosquitoes that tried to set up camp there. But the fountain was removed by RCSC officials.

“That is an irrigation lake with water level changes daily,” said Brian Duthu, RCSC golf and grounds director.
“That is why the fountain was removed, because we believed there was enough water movement.”

However, Mr. Wallace believes a fountain will help provide more water filtration. He added he would be willing to provide funds to pay for a fountain, and he believes his neighbors would be interested in pitching in as well.

Brian Duthu

Mr. Duthu said residents with homes adjoining an irrigation lake on South Golf Course, 11000 N. 103rd Ave., did just that a few years ago. He also said the addition of a fountain at Riverview would start with discussion by the course’s Beautification Committee, which is part of the Greens Committee.

Resident Joan Wagner Jeffson has a problem that appears more difficult to address. She also lives adjacent to Riverview and wanted to see an adjustment of the maintenance crew schedule.

“We enjoy the view,” she said. “But the maintenance starts at 4 a.m. and we are wondering if you could avoid having such an early start on Sunday mornings.”

Mr. Duthu said that was unlikely.

“Sunday is still a heavy play day,” he explained. “I don’t see a way we can do that (later maintenance) and get the course ready for play.”
