Cathy Yndestad, 43, of Mesa, captured the world championship title in the women’s 40-44 age-group at the 2021 Intermountain Healthcare Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

The triathlon was presented by the Utah Sports Commission in St. George, Utah, on Sept. 18. More than 3,500 athletes checked in to compete, according to a release.

Yndestad completed the event in 4:45:46 — swim, 29:13; bike, 2:45:46; and run, 1:36:36 — beating out the top athletes in their age group.

The race encompassed a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim in the ROKA Swim Course at the Sand Hollow Reservoir in Hurricane, Utah, followed by the 56-mile (90.1 km) Ventum Bike Course that led athletes through Snow Canyon State Park. The event capped off with a two-loop, 13.1-mile (21 km) HOKA One One Run Course through Red Hills Parkway as athletes finished to crowds in historic downtown St. George, the release said.

Athletes ranging from 18-84 from more than 85 countries, regions and territories competed in this world-renowned event. In order to qualify for the championship, more than 50,000 age-group athletes competed to earn slots at more than 45 qualifying Ironman 70.3 events held worldwide. Qualification for the 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championship, which will be in St. George, Utah, is underway.
