Maricopa County supervisors accepting applications for new sheriff

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is looking to appoint the next sheriff.

Board members officially accepted Sheriff Paul Penzone’s resignation Wednesday. His last day is Friday, Jan. 12. Chief Deputy Sheriff Russ Skinner will fill the role until the board makes an appointment.

“I would like to thank Sheriff Penzone for going above and beyond to keep Maricopa County residents safe,” Chairman Jack Sellers, District 1, shared in a press release. “In particular, I appreciate his collaboration on security matters related to elections.”

Per state law, sheriff candidates must be a resident of Maricopa County and of the same party as the outgoing sheriff which, in this case, is a Democrat.

Applicants should send letters of interest along with a resume to the Office of the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, 301 W. Jefferson, 10th Floor, Phoenix, AZ 85003 or email it to ClerkBoard@maricopa.gov. All documents filed with the Clerk’s Office will become public records. Applicants are subject to a background check.

Applications are accepted until 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19.

The person chosen by the Board will fill the vacancy until the November election, when Maricopa County residents will elect a new Sheriff.
