Man dies Thanksgiving night in shooting involving police

Phoenix police detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday night.

A man died at the scene of the shooting after police said he raised a handgun while in the backyard of a home near 79th Avenue and Mitchell Drive.

Officers responded about 10:20 p.m. Nov. 28 to the vicinity of 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road after a caller reported following a person who was “harassing someone else and was possibly armed,” according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

The caller provided a description of the vehicle, and authorities found it. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver sped away.

With the assistance of the department’s air support unit, the vehicle was tracked to the area of 79th Avenue and Mitchell Drive, where the driver left the car and ran into the backyard of a nearby home, police said.

Officers arrived and heard what they believed to be a gunshot coming from the yard, according to the release.

“As containment was being set up, an officer who had deployed with his rifle, saw a man matching the description given out for the driver of the vehicle that had failed to yield,” the release stated.

“This man was seen with a handgun in his hand and raised it up. This is when the officer-involved shooting occurred.”

The man suffered at least one gunshot wound and did not survive his injuries, police said, adding a firearm was found at the scene.
