A man is in jail after he assaulted a Phoenix Police officer while attempting to flee the scene of a robbery, police officials stated in a news release.

About 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Phoenix Police responded to the area of Second Way and Dunlap Avenue regarding a robbery call. Details on the call indicated the victim was robbed by an armed suspect. The suspect was described as an adult male with identifiable clothing, police said.

When officers arrived, they observed a man, later identified as 41-year-old Christopher Leos, matching the suspect's description and attempted to contact him. Leos ran from the officers who gave chase. One officer caught up to Leos, but Leos resisted arrest when the officer attempted to detain him, police said.

During this struggle, Leos bit the officer’s arm, breaking skin. He also attempted to grab the officer’s weapon. Ultimately the officer was able to control Leos, and he was arrested, police said.

The officer involved in the struggle, who the department did not identify, suffered a non-life-threatening injury to one of his arms in addition to the bite. He was treated at the hospital and released, police said.

The original robbery victim who initially made the call for service did not remain on scene and was not contacted. Leos was booked into jail on multiple counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and several outstanding arrest warrants, police said.

Additional details pertaining to this incident remain part of the ongoing investigation, police said.
