Sun City West group quilts for charitable causes

Quilts for a Cause is a dedicated group within Sun City West’s Rip ‘N Sew Club. Pre-COVID, the group made and donated a record-breaking 800 quilts to charitable organizations in the community and others nearby. Even during the COVID shutdown, the group completed 500-plus quilts, according to Darlene Mullen, the group’s organizer.

The quilts are donated to organizations such as Hospice of the Valley, Ryan House Kids (for children with cancer), VFW Post #285, the Sun City West Sheriff’s Posse and Sun City West’s fire department.

Quilts for a Cause meets on the second and last Tuesday of each month at the Rip ‘N Sew Club. Sometimes when the need is even greater, a special “sew in” is planned. During one such “sew in,” 30 volunteers spent a day putting the finishing touches on 80 quilts. Hospice of the Valley received 60 of them.

It’s a passionate group of volunteers who know their quilts are providing comfort to others. Mullen has been a member of the group for at least 22 years. Even during the COVID shutdown, when the group wasn’t meeting, she completed 78 quilts on her own.

The beautiful quilts are greatly appreciated by the various organizations.

Hospice of the Valley provides medical, social and spiritual support to people with life-limiting illnesses who want to be cared for in their own home. Diane Walton, a retired Hospice of the Valley employee, business development consultant and 17-year volunteer explained that the quilts provide comfort to patients and their families.

“It’s a joy to behold,” she said. “We thank the Rip ‘N Sew members and extend our deepest appreciation on behalf of the patients and families for the comfort and joy your quilts provide.”

Quilts for a Cause presents Patriotic Valor Quilts to United States military veterans. The posse and fire department distribute the group’s quilts at car accidents and home fires.

The fabric used in the quilts frequently is donated by club members or those in the community who no longer sew. Rip ‘N Sew pays for batting used in the quilts and any other necessary supplies, such as thread.

Quilts for a Cause always is looking for new members interested in helping to continue a wonderful Sun City West tradition. Volunteers must be Rip ‘N Sew members.
