On a weekend where three district compatriots reached the state finals, the Liberty football Lions undoubtedly played the best of any Peoria Unified School District team.
Trailing Chandler (ranked #5 nationally by MaxPreps) 28-7 at the half, the Lions embarked on a comeback that had the four-time defending champs reeling, tying the Wolves at 3:13 remaining and forcing overtime in the Dec. 5 open division semifinal.
Saved by the buzzer, No. 1 Chandler (9-0) regrouped and rode star senior tailback Elijah Sanders on three straight carries - finishing the drive with a one-yard touchdown. Liberty responded with a three-yard fourth down toss from seniorquarterback Brock Mast to sophomore receiver Grant Brunelle.
