Teen killed in collision near Peoria High School

Posted

A 14-year-old is dead after a vehicle struck him in Peoria.

The incident occurred Friday morning near 83rd Avenue and Cholla Street.

Police said a 14-year-old boy was walking in a crosswalk with the cross lights flashing when he was struck by a minivan.

The teen was taken to the hospital with significant injuries.  He was later pronounced dead. Police said he was a freshman at Peoria High School.

The driver of the vehicle was uninjured and remained at the scene.

Police said impairment does not appear to be a factor in the collision, but speed and distraction are still being investigated as possible factors. No arrests have been made and no citations have been issued.

"The Peoria Police Department extends our thoughts and condolences to the student’s family and to all who have been affected by this tragic incident," police stated.

Officials  closed both directions of 83rd in that area but the roadway reopened around 1 p.m.

The Peoria Unified School District released a statement on the fatal crash:

"It is with a heavy heart that we share that a Peoria High School freshman student was killed this morning as a result of a vehicle/pedestrian accident. Unfortunately, the injuries sustained from the accident were too severe and the student passed away.

We would like to extend our sympathies to the family and all who knew and loved this child. We are truly devastated by this loss, and we send our heartfelt condolences out to the entire Panther family.

Students were informed of this tragedy by their teachers in class today. Our Crisis Response Team has been activated and is on the campus helping students and staff work through their grief. If students need support over the weekend, there are two phone numbers printed on the backside of their badges that they can call to receive support: Teen Lifeline and Crisis Line.

We ask for your respect when approaching any of the students leaving Peoria High School during dismissal time today. Many are minors and may not have parent permission to participate in interviews."
